LOS ANGELES, Oct. 11 (UPI) -- Ryan Lochte has revealed the details behind his recent engagement to girlfriend Kayla Rae Reid.

"I couldn't really focus, I couldn't concentrate," Lochte said Monday of asking the Playboy model's hand in marriage to Us Weekly while backstage at Dancing with the Stars.

"I'm just happy everything worked out."

Lochte then explained how nervous he was during the proposal and how despite practicing what he was going to say in advance, he still fumbled over his words.

"I was just so clammy and nervous - but then I finally got the courage to ask, 'Will you marry me?' And she said yes! And I was like, 'Yeah! My life is complete!"' the Olympic swimmer said.

Both Lochte and Reid shared on social media the engagement Sunday with photos featuring the couple sharing a passionate kiss. The pair were first linked together in January after meeting at a Los Angeles nightclub.

"She's stuck behind me this whole entire time when I was at my darkest point and she was my rock," Lochte continued to Us Weekly referring to his recent Summer Olympics controversy in which the 32-year-old fabricated a story about being pulled over and held at gunpoint while in Rio.

"That's when I knew, I'm not letting this one go!"

Lochte also explained how the wedding ceremony is still a ways off to "make sure its perfect."

"We'll probably do it in the fall of next year. I just want my family and my closest friends there and she wants the same thing. So we might keep the wedding small, but the party afterward - that's going to be big," he said.
