LOS ANGELES, Sept. 14 (UPI) -- Tony Shalhoub joins Rachel Brosnahan in Gilmore Girls creator Amy Sherman-Palladino's new Amazon drama The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

Shalhoub has signed on to play Abe Weissman, the father of Brosnahan's character Miriam "Midge" Maisel, in the upcoming series on Amazon's streaming site. Weissman is characterized as "an academic and intellectual who believes in books and facts and speaking as little as possible."

Set in the 1950s, the show follows Maisel as she navigates a life change that takes her from upper class Manhattan to the stand-up comedy world in New York's Greenwich Village.

Broshanan starred as Rachel Posner on Netflix's drama House of Cards, and Shalhoub is known for his Emmy-winning role as Adrian Monk on USA's comedy Monk.
