LOS ANGELES, Sept. 9 (UPI) -- Ariel Winter will no longer begin college in the fall.

The 18-year-old actress revealed she'll defer her start at University of California, Los Angeles until 2017 while speaking to E! News at the Emmy Casting Directors Nominees Reception on Thursday.

"Unfortunately this year, due to production schedule, I have to start next year," she explained. "So I will be starting as a [UCLA] Bruin next year."

Winter had announced in April that she had accepted UCLA's offer of admission. The Modern Family star, who plans to major in political science, told E! in 2015 that she hopes to become a lawyer.

"I would love to continue acting but it's definitely important, I think, to go and do something else as well," she said at the time. "You never know if something's not going to work out, if one day acting is like, 'No, we don't like you anymore!'"

"You gotta have something else you can do," the actress added. "I've always been interested in law so I think it'll definitely be something that I'll love to do and also go to school for."

Winter plays Alex Dunphy on Modern Family, which will return for an eighth season Sept. 21 on ABC. The actress stunned in a crop top and skirt ensemble at Drake's star-studded concert Wednesday in Los Angeles.
