Jon Polito, 'Big Lebowski' star dead at 65

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 2 (UPI) -- Actor Jon Polito, best known for his roles in Coen brother films such as The Big Lebowski, has died at the age of 65.

Polito's friend, film director John McNaughton, confirmed the news Friday on Facebook alongside a photo of the pair together.

"Very sad to learn that my dear friend and collaborator, Jon Polito has passed away," McNaughton wrote. John is probably best known for his work in Coen Brothers films, notably Barton Fink, Miller's Crossing and The Big Lebowski."

"Jon and I worked together in TV starting with episodes of Homicide: Life on the Street, some pilots and Masters of Horror. He appeared in over 100 films, countless TV episodes and on Broadway. Jon was a born actor and will be deeply missed by his legion of friends, fans, family and of course his long time partner, Darryl Armbruster to whom I send my condolences. R.I.P. old pal," he continued.

Polito's cause of death has yet to be revealed.

More recently, Polito starred in three episodes of Modern Family as character Earl Chambers, a rival to Ed O' Neill's Jay Pritchett at work. He also landed a role in upcoming film The Maestro which is currently in pre-production.

Polito leaves behind his partner of many years, actor Darryl Armbruster.
