Celebrities mourn the death of Gene Wilder

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 30 (UPI) -- Celebrities have taken to social media to mourn the passing of Gene Wilder, who starred in nearly 30 films over four decades. Wilder died on Monday at the age of 83.

Famed director Mel Brooks, who led Wilder in The Producers, Blazing Saddles, and Young Frankenstein, tweeted that Wilder was "one of the truly great talents of our time."

James Bond, Sir Roger Moore, said he had "only happy memories" of his Sunday Lovers co-star.

Comedy legend Carl Reiner tweeted a photo of Wilder writing, "Au revoir to a gifted actor..."

Fellow funnyman Jim Carrey said, "Gene Wilder was one of the funniest and sweetest energies ever to take a human form. If there's a heaven he has a Golden Ticket," referring to Wilder's best-known role as Willy Wonka in the 1971 classic Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

Filmmaker and comedian Albert Brooks said Wilder was "as funny as they come."

Billy Crystal called Wilder "a giant of comedy" and "a true genius."

Actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus thanked Wilder "for all that joy," calling him an "influence."

Actor Jeffery Tambor said there were "no words" but managed to find a few including "hilarious" and "brilliantly brilliant."

Director Kevin Smith called Wilder "the face of childhood joy," saying Wilder's longtime love Gilda Radner would be waiting for him on the other side. Radner died of ovarian cancer in 1989.

Actor Orlando Jones used a popular Willy Wonka meme to honor Wilder saying "Say hello to Gilda and Richard for us," referring to Richard Pryor, with whom Wilder worked on a number of movies including 1980's Stir Crazy.
