NEW YORK, Aug. 23 (UPI) -- Newly crowned WWE Universal Champion Finn Balor was forced to relinquish his title Monday on Raw due to a shoulder injury.

The injury was sustained in the Demon King's match from SummerSlam against Seth Rollins as they battled to become to first ever Universal Champion in WWE history.

"This championship represent a lifetime of sacrifice, and if you believe in yourself, you can achieve absolutely anything, " Balor said to kick-off the show alongside Raw general manager Mick Foley and commissioner Stephanie McMahon who were on hand to receive the red colored belt.

"Rest assured that when I am healthy and when I am fit and when I am ready, I will be back and this title is the first thing that I am coming for," he concluded before Foley took possession of the title and held up Balor's hand amongst cheers from the crowd.

On his way to the back, Rollins then also entered the arena and began laughing at his opponent's bad fortune.

A new tournament was then set-up on Raw where winners from four separate matches would then compete next week in a Fatal 4-Way match for the Universal Championship. Those winners include Rollins, Kevin Owens, Big Cass, and Roman Reigns.
