LOS ANGELES, Aug. 11 (UPI) -- John Legend is opening up about becoming a first-time father.

The 37-year-old singer revealed how daughter Luna has changed his life and his dynamic with wife Chrissy Teigen while speaking to Entertainment Tonight at the Television Academy's "Unlock Your Potential" event Tuesday.

"You never know what it's going to feel like until it happens," Legend said. "And this wasn't an accident. This was something that we have been working on and [we've been] trying to have a family for a while."

"I was pretty excited from the beginning, but once she came out and she was actually a real thing that we could hug and love and see her develop, it's pretty powerful," he added. "It is a pretty powerful emotion to see the product of your love right there in front of you."

Legend and Teigen, who married in Como, Italy, in 2013, welcomed Luna in April. The singer said fatherhood has proved very different from marriage and described parenthood as an "all-encompassing" responsibility.

"You have to spend every moment even when you are not with [Luna] thinking about who is with them, and what's happening with them, and making sure that everything is, you know, comfortable for them," he said.

"It definitely makes you realize a heightened level of responsibility and it makes you realize that there is a lot of work to be doing, and you realize what you work is for," the star added.

Legend also revealed Luna had an "influence" on his forthcoming new album. Teigen had shared a photo of the singer and Luna listening to the record in May, writing, "Listening to daddy's new album."
