Leslie Jones invited to Rio after live-tweeting Summer Games

RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug. 8 (UPI) -- Leslie Jones was invited by NBC to help cover the Summer Olympics after she started live-tweeting the event.

"Yep I love the Olympics it's the only time all countries come together to compete! I love it!!" the Ghostbusters star wrote on Twitter Saturday alongside a video of herself fully decked out in an American flag outfit that was made complete by a collection of fake gold medals.

Jones continually posted comedic videos of herself cheering on the athletes of Team USA and offered commentary on how she would fare in the various sporting events.

"Yep we got us a medal Ginny Thrasher shooting that rifle!" she tweeted with a video featuring Jones starting a USA chant. "The only problem with me learning to swim is getting into booty water. Everybody booty is in the water I don't want my face in that. Sorry," she joked about competing in the swimming events.

Jones' enthusiastic tweeting caught the eye of NBC executive and producer of the Olympics Jim Bell who formally invited her to help host the event. "You're officially invited to Rio. Want to come?" Bell wrote to which Jones responded, "Hmmmm don't play cause y'all need me..I would have the whole Olympics pumped!!"

The Olympic live-tweeting marked a return to Twitter for Jones who took a break from the social media site after she became the target of a hate campaign surrounding her role in Ghostbusters. Several users were permanently banned from Twitter after the incident including noted conservative commentator Milo Yiannopoulos.
