NEW YORK, Aug. 5 (UPI) -- Jamie Dornan has nothing but praise for Fifty Shades co-star Dakota Johnson.

The 34-year-old Northern Irish actor discussed his dynamic with the 26-year-old American actress on Friday's episode of Good Morning America after wrapping Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed.

"We have a lot of fun together," the star said. "Dakota's funny. We've been through this mad journey together. I'm very thankful that I've done it with someone who's easy to do it with, because it could've been a very different experience had we not got on."

Dornan and Johnson filmed Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed, the final two installments in the trilogy, back-to-back this year. The former will open Feb. 10, 2017, while Fifty Shades Freed is slated for Feb. 9, 2018.

"It was the right way to do it," Dornan said. "It was good for everyone, in terms of keeping up with the energy. It's a slog making movies. A lot of energy goes into them, and if you can do two at once, I think it makes sense for everyone."

The Fifty Shades movies are based on the E.L. James book series, which follows the romance between BDSM-loving businessman Christian Grey (Dornan) and college student Anastasia Steele (Johnson). The first film, Fifty Shades of Grey, opened in 2015 and earned $571 million at the box office.

"[The sex scenes] are pretty tedious," Johnson admitted in the May issue of Interview magazine. "We're not having actual sex. But I've been simulating sex for seven hours straight now, and I'm over it."

Dornan will next star in the WWII thriller Anthropoid with Cillian Murphy. The actors play two real-life Czech soldiers who were tasked with assassinating Nazi official Reinhard Heydrick (Detlef Bothe).
