Photos from set of 'American Horror Story' hint at colonial theme

SANTA CLARITA, Calif., Aug. 2 (UPI) -- Rumors about the theme of Season 6 of American Horror Story have been swirling since the upcoming season was announced, and recent photos obtained by TMZ seem to shed a little light on the mystery.

The photos reportedly show the set of the FX horror drama, which is being shot in Santa Clarita, Calif., and, from the looks of it, AHS is taking things back in time. To the colonial era.

Pictures of the set hint that AHS creator Ryan Murphy will be tackling the story of the Lost Colony on Roanoke Island in Virginia where 114 colonists disappeared between 1587 and 1590.

In 1587, adventurer John White brought a group of settlers to the island off the coast of Virginia. He set sail back to England for supplies and, when he returned three years later, everyone was gone, including his daughter, Elenora and her infant daughter, Virginia. The only clue White found was the word "croatoan" - also the name of a nearby tribe – carved into a tree.

There was no sign of a struggle and White was never able to find out what happened to the Lost Colony.

This isn't the first time that Murphy has drawn on history. The third season of the show, AHS: Coven, delved into the story of witches from Salem living in New Orleans.

Season 6 is set to premiere on Sept. 14 and will star Lady Gaga, Emma Roberts, Angela Bassett, Kathy Bates, and Matt Bomer.
