LONDON, July 28 (UPI) -- The hit stage play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child will continue performances in the West End through at least December 2017, the show's producers announced.

Starting Aug. 4, an additional 250,000 tickets will be released for sale.

The eighth story in the Harry Potter series -- and the first official Harry Potter story to be presented on stage -- began previews in June in London's Palace Theatre and will officially open this weekend. The drama follows the now-adult wizards Harry, Hermione and Ron, and their families, about 20 years after the events of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the seventh book in the franchise.

Based on an original story by Potter creator J.K. Rowling, Jack Thorne and John Tiffany, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is a new play by Thorne, directed by Tiffany with movement by Steven Hoggett, set by Christine Jones, costumes by Katrina Lindsay, and music and arrangements by Imogen Heap.

"Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is one play presented in two parts. Both parts are intended to be seen in order on the same day [matinee and evening] or on two consecutive evenings," the play's website notes.
