LONDON, July 19 (UPI) -- Pippa Middleton, Kate Middleton's sister, is engaged to her longtime millionaire boyfriend, James Matthews.

The pair confirmed the engagement in a statement released Sunday. "Miss Pippa Middleton and Mr. James Matthews are delighted to announce they became engaged on Sunday, July 17, and plan to marry next year," Us Weekly reported.

Pippa Middleton, 32, who served as maid of honor for her sister's wedding to Prince William, notably hid her left hand from photographers while attending a gala for the British Heart Foundation wearing a floral L.K. Bennett gown, People reported.

They weren't quite ready to announce. But now it's official and Middleton's father, Michael Middleton, said he is "absolutely thrilled" for his daughter and Matthews. He called them "a wonderful couple."

The royal sister-in-law began dating Matthews in 2012 before the couple split. She later dated Nico Jackson for three years.

Three months after that breakup, Matthews, 40, a hedge fund manager, was spotted beside Middleton during her vacation to St. Barts with her brother, James Middleton.

"Mike and Carole Middleton are very happy," a friend of the couple revealed, according to E! News. "They like James and they are sure he will make Pippa very happy."
