Ludacris will perform for the U.S. Navy on July 4 on Guantanamo Bay

GUANTANAMO BAY, Cuba, June 28 (UPI) -- Rapper Ludacris takes his show to Guantanamo Bay to perform a Fourth of July concert for the U.S Navy.

He will headline the annual Freedom Festival, performing before about 6,000 military personnel. The festival, which includes family activities, kicks off at 6 p.m., The Independent reported and the music portion of the event will begin at 10 p.m.

The Grammy Award-winning artist has performed previously for U.S.military personnel at both Maryland's Fort Meade in 2010 and at Fort Hood in Texas in 2014.

"Every year we get a special guest around the Fourth of July, but Gitmo hasn't seen a star with as big a name as Ludacris in several years," Navy Chief Monique Hilley said. "The base is really looking forward to it."

Base officials notified residents a few days ago that Ludacris would perform at the free festival, the Miami Herald reported.The event takes place at Guantánamo's Windward Ferry Landing.

Guantanamo is best known as the detention center that holds 89 war-on-terror prisoners, the prison, President Barack Obama wants closed. It is inside a restricted military zone and is home to troops, Navy families and defense contractors.

The area where the music will be performed is far enough away from the actual detention camps that prisoners there won't be enjoying Ludacris belt out My Chick Bad or Act a Fool.

"This is by far the biggest entertainment since I have been here," Christina Blevins told The Guardian. "I'm thankful we get to see him before we leave. I will take many memories away from this place but this one will be a huge highlight."
