LOS ANGELES, June 27 (UPI) -- Spike Lee's purple outfit tribute to Prince at the 2016 BET Awards was mocked on social media by commenters who compared the filmmaker to Willy Wonka.
Lee showed up to the event wearing a purple suit complete with a purple top hat that in fans' minds more closely resembled the fictional candy maker than the deceased Prince who was being honored during the ceremony.
"Who wore it better?" wrote viewer Billy D. on Twitter alongside a side-by-side shot of Lee from the show next to a photo of Gene Wilder as Wonka from 1971's classic Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory.
"Spike Lee looks like he's about to drop the hottest candy bar of 2016," added Twitter user Stephen.
A few reporters and comedians also joined in on the joke including outspoken radio host Charlamagne Tha God who tweeted, "That hat Spike Lee wearing got me thinking a Spike Lee remake of Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory would be lit."

Lee previously paid tribute to Prince in April with a Brooklyn-based event that drew hundreds of fans following the "Purple Rain" singer's tragic death.
