LAS VEGAS, June 20 (UPI) -- WWE Money in the Bank rocked the sports entertainment world Sunday with the crowning of a new, surprise champion.

The event, which took place inside the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nev., featured the long-awaited confrontation between Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.

The former Shield brothers were previously destined to meet at Survivor Series back in November while Rollins was champ, but the match was cancelled after he was sidelined due to injury. Now fully healed, Rollins attempted to take back the title he never lost from Reigns in a competitive match that saw both Superstars put it all on the line.

After impressively reversing Reigns devastating Spear into a Pedigree mid-air, Rollins was able to put Reigns away after a second Pedigree earning him back the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.

Rollins' victory celebration was short-lived however as the duo's other former Shield partner Dean Ambrose suddenly attacked The Architect from behind with his Money in the Bank briefcase he had won earlier in the night in a brutal ladder against Alberto Del Rio, Cesaro, Chris Jericho, Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn.

Ambrose then took full advantage of the briefcase's guaranteed championship match at any given time and hit Rollins with Dirty Deeds for the three count to become the new WWE World Heavyweight Champion. "Ambrose with the briefcase!!! He's cashing in!!!" WWE noted on Twitter alongside video of the confrontation.

"The party tonight in Vegas will be EPIC to say the least!!" they continued alongside a clip of Ambrose celebrating his victory.

Money in the Bank also featured what was billed as a dream match between squared circle veterans John Cena and AJ Styles who competed against each other for the first time in a hard-fought match that ended in controversy.

After trading blows throughout the bout, Cena seemed to have the match won when he hit Styles with his patent Attitude Adjustment, but was unable to secure the three count after the referee was knocked down. This gave Styles' friends Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson the opening they needed to hit Cena with the Magic Killer, securing Styles the victory as he was dragged over the Cenation leader for the three count as the referee remerged.

"The Club helps @AJStylesOrg cover @JohnCena..ONE TWO THREE!! Styles wins the #DreamMatch," WWE wrote on Twitter with a photo of a knocked out Styles covering Cena.

Other moments from the event included The New Day retaining their WWE Tag Team Championships against The Club, Enzo Amore and Big Cass and The Vaudevillians, Baron Corbin defeating Dolph Ziggler, Charlotte and Dana Brooke defeating Natalya and Becky Lynch in a tag-team match, Apollo Crews beating Sheamus, and Rusev retaining his United States Championship against Titus O'Neil.
