NEW YORK, June 17 (UPI) -- Hamilton star and creator Lin-Manuel Miranda announced Thursday that he will be stepping down from the titular role of Alexander Hamilton in the Tony award winning hip-hop musical on July 9.
Manuel then took to Twitter to name his replacement as Hamilton understudy Javier Munoz.
3) I'm so thrilled for @JMunozActor. We created the role together. I'm still jealous he got to perform for Jay-Z & Beyonce.— Lin-Manuel Miranda (@Lin_Manuel) June 16, 2016
Munoz is expected to take over for Miranda on July 11.
Miranda also revealed that Hamilton will be featured in a 90-minute documentary which will be released on October 17 as part of PBS' Great Performances series.
"It's going to have footage from the show that no one has seen yet," Miranda said. "I want to preface this. It's not like the Heights doc. It's not the road to Broadway. We lived that movie already. It's a great little Great Performances movie; this is very different. This is sort of where Hamilton intersects with history."
Up next for Miranda is the upcoming Mary Poppins sequel, scheduled for release in 2018, and the Disney movie Moana, for which he wrote the music.
