LOS ANGELES, June 14 (UPI) -- Developer and publisher Capcom shocked the gaming world Monday, revealing the next title in their popular horror series, Resident Evil 7: Biohazard.

The long-running zombie franchise made its triumphant return during Sony's annual E3 press conference along with a debut trailer that highlighted the sequel's new haunted and creepy setting that calls back to Resident Evil's first game which took place inside a mansion.

Set inside a "foreboding, derelict plantation mansion in rural America," the trailer was presented in a new first-person perspective as an unarmed character explored the zombie-infested grounds finding terror around every corner.

"While Resident Evil 7 draws from the series' roots of atmospheric survival horror, it also delivers a whole new level of terror," Capcom noted on their official blog. "In the classic Resident Evil games of yesteryear, players braced for fear in the first-person via the creepy door-opening scenes, and Resident Evil 7 ramps up that tension with an immersive first-person view and a photorealistic graphical style."

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard will work exclusively with Sony's Playstation VR headset for the Playstation 4 bringing with it a new immersive level of horror, but it is not required to enjoy the game. It will also be released for the Xbox One and PC on Jan. 24, 2017.
