Jessica Lange, Michael Shannon and 'Shuffle Along' honored at the Drama Desk Awards

NEW YORK, June 6 (UPI) -- The Humans and Shuffle Along were declared Outstanding Play and Musical respectively at Sunday's 2016 Drama Desk Awards ceremony in New York.

A View From the Bridge won the prize for Outstanding Revival of a Play and Jane Krakowski scored the award for Outstanding Featured Actress in a Musical for She Loves Me, which was named Outstanding Revival of a Musical.

Frank Langella took home the statuette for Outstanding Actor in a Play for The Father, while Jessica Lange earned the accolade for Outstanding Actress in a Play for Long Day's Journey Into Night and Lange's co-star Michael Shannon was honored as Outstanding Featured Actor in a Play.

Danny Burstein was recognized as Outstanding Actor in a Musical for Fiddler on the Roof and Cynthia Erivo won for Outstanding Actress in a Musical for The Color Purple. Christopher Fitzgerald picked up the trophy for Outstanding Featured Actor in a Musical for Waitress and Saycon Sengbloh garnered the prize for Outstanding Featured Actress in a Play for Eclipsed.

Hamilton, which is up for a record-setting 16 Tony Awards this year, won the 2015 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Musical, as well as seven other prizes. The musical was recognized during its off-Broadway run before it transferred to Broadway where it became eligible for the Tony nominations.

Drama Desk Awards recognize excellence in Broadway, off-Broadway and off-off-Broadway productions.
