Sara Quin of Tegan and Sara explains 'BWU' is an 'anti-wedding song'

NEW YORK, June 3 (UPI) -- Sara Quin of Tegan and Sara spilled a multitude of details on the inspiration behind songs on the duo's album Love You To Death.

Speaking with Rolling Stone, Quin explained the first single from the album -- which has been called "mature" from a critic at The Verge -- "Boyfriend," was inspired by one of her past relationships.

"I wanted to write a classic pop song. It's about the early days of dating someone where you really like them and you want to make it official," the 35-year-old twin said. "But you have that fear that you're going to be rejected. It's about a relationship I had had, but I wanted it to be broad enough that you didn't have to be in the same situation as me to relate to it."

Quin, who describes herself as queer, also explained a standout from Love You To Death, titled "BWU" and sang as "Be With You." When asked whether the song was "anti-marriage," the artist laughed, saying it was instead an "anti-wedding song."

"It's another example of me attempting to write a song that's supposed to be a sweet pop song but ends up darker, like 'Boyfriend,'" she said.

"'Be With You' is interesting because Tegan and I were such big advocates of the same-sex marriage movement in the United States and in Canada. But the twist is that I, personally, don't want to be married," she continued.

"As I've gotten older, because I'm queer and because it's suddenly really apparent how deeply unfair it was that gay people couldn't get married, I've had to reassess my feelings about marriage," she said, adding her family didn't put much emphasis on the status. "So now I'm asking, 'What does it mean, historically and culturally?' I feel so torn about it, because I don't want to seem like a jerk."

Quin assured the interviewer she loves weddings, saying "I'm the best wedding person. I'm the one who dances 'til they're like, 'Please, for the love of God, leave.' I cry at every wedding. I have the best time."

In April, Tegan and Sara announced their upcoming tour promoting Love You To Death. They will begin the tour spanning Canada and the United States in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, in Canada in early September. The tour, which will also have a few Australia, United Kingdom and Asia dates, will close in mid-November in Florida.
