NEW YORK, May 19 (UPI) -- John Legend thinks Chrissy Teigen is a wonderful mother to their daughter, Luna.

The 37-year-old singer defended his wife on Thursday's episode of the Today show after Teigen faced criticism for going on a dinner date with him in April, just days after giving birth. Legend previously stood up for Teigen on Twitter.

"We were going out together," Legend said. "If you're saying she's a terrible parent for leaving the child at home -- which she's not, obviously -- if you're going to say to her, then say it to me, too."

"Every once in a while you have to take care of yourselves as a couple," he explained. "We've got Chrissy's mom at home. We've got a great baby nurse. We've got all kinds of help and we know Luna's in good hands when we do have a chance to leave the house."

Teigen came under fire after she and Legend were spotted at dinner nine days after welcoming Luna. The model took the brunt of the criticism, causing Legend to call out mom-shamers this month.

"Funny there's no dad-shaming. When both of us go out to dinner, shame both of us so Chrissy doesn't have to take it all. We'll split it," he tweeted.

Teigen herself addressed the controversy on Tuesday's episode of Good Morning America. The model admitted she was taken aback by fan vitriol about the dinner date, saying the criticism just "kept going on and on."

"We needed a break. We needed to go enjoy each other's company and be out," she explained. "We were gone for an hour. We had a good meal together. I think happy mommy, happy daddy, happy baby."

Legend told Today he and Teigen are having "a great time" as parents and adjusting to the lack of sleep.

The couple married in 2013 and welcomed Luna on April 14.
