WASHINGTON, May 17 (UPI) -- Lena Dunham has released a surprise chapbook containing excerpts of her diary when she was 19 years old, titled Is It Evil Not to Be Sure?

The Girls showrunner announced the 56-page book Tuesday, writing on her website that although she was "mortified" to come across the old diary entries, she was "moved -- maybe even proud of -- how carefully I had recorded that period of time."

"I have always believed that women chronicling their own lives, even (or especially) at their most mundane, is a radical act," she wrote.

Proceeds from 2,000 signed copies of the little pink book will go toward funding the organization Girls Write Now, which aims to give women tools to support their writing and telling of stories. The collection of entries is also available as an eBook.

"I can't think of a more admirable goal for an organization, or a better reason to expose the oft troubling thought patters of my final teenage year," she wrote.

On Instagram, Dunham also posted about her new book, which will be released on the same day as the Girls Write Now awards ceremony. "I love holding this little pink thing in my hand and I hope you will too!" she said.
