Gwyneth Paltrow discusses 'toxic' lubricant, Goop's sex issue on 'Chelsea'

LOS ANGELES, May 12 (UPI) -- Gwyneth Paltrow says her latest Goop issue, the first focused entirely on sex, was inspired by an episode of Grace and Frankie.

While speaking to friend and comedian Chelsea Handler on her Netflix show Chelsea, Paltrow said an episode discussing toxicity in personal lubricant turned her on to the topic.

In the episode, Lily Tomlin's character Frankie makes her own lubricant from sweet potatoes.

"We started thinking, 'Is lube toxic? Why is she making homemade lube?' And then we started reading [the ingredients]," Paltrow said to Handler. "Were very conscious about non-toxic products at Goop. And then we learned that lube is actually really toxic."

After some research, Paltrow and her Goop team found a personal lubricant that met their standards. "It goes in very absorbent areas, as we know, so, yes, we found a nontoxic organic lube that we are now selling on Goop.com."

The Goop sex issue also features such outrageous items as a $535 whip and $15,000 14-karat-gold sex toy.

During her interview with Handler, Paltrow also revealed she faced a lot of hate when first starting out with Goop.

"I think it is challenging for people to change careers," the 43-year-old actress said. "If you're in the public eye and you make a shift I think it's confusing for a minute... In a lot of ways I was the first, so I took a lot of [expletive]."
