William Schallert, 'Patty Duke Show' star dead at 93

LOS ANGELES, May 10 (UPI) -- Actor William Schallert, known for his roles on The Patty Duke Show, Star Trek and many more, has died at the age of 93.

According to CNN, Schallert died in Pacific Palisades, California, his son Edwin confirmed. A cause of death has yet to be confirmed.

With over 400 acting credits listed from 1947 to 2014 on his IMDB page, Schallert was a versatile actor who has starred in some of the most popular television shows both new and old. Schallert became famous for portraying Martin Lane, the father of troublesome teenager Patty Lane (Duke) on The Patty Duke Show which ran from 1963-1966 on ABC.

While popular for roles on CBS' The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis and Oscar-winning best picture In the Heat of the Night in 1967, Schallert is also known for portraying Federation Undersecretary of Agricultural Affairs Nilz Baris in a fan-favorite episode of Star Trek entitled "The Trouble With Tribbles."

More acting credits include roles on Leave It to Beaver, The Waltons, The Twilight Zone, The Wild Wild West, Get Smart and Hawaii Five-O while more recent stints on television include roles on 2 Broke Girls, Desperate Housewives, How I Met Your Mother, My Name is Earl and as mayor of Bon Temps, Louisiana, on HBO's hit drama, True Blood.

A former president of the Screen Actors Guild, Schallert is survived by sons Edwin, Joseph, Mark and Brendan and seven grandchildren.
