NEW YORK, May 3 (UPI) -- Broadway's musical comedy Disaster! will play its final performance Sunday, producers announced Tuesday.
The closing notice came just hours after cast member Jennifer Simard earned a Tony nod for Best Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical for her scene-stealing turn as a gambling-addicted nun.
The 1970s-set show -- a spoof of disaster movies -- will have played 32 preview and 72 regular performances at the Nederlander Theatre by the time the final curtain drops.
"On behalf of the producing team, I want to applaud the entire company for bringing joy and laughter to thousands of people each week for these past several months. I'd also like to congratulate Jennifer Simard for her Tony nomination for her indelible performance," producer Robert Ahrens said in a statement.
Directed by Jack Plotnick with a book by Plotnick and show co-star Seth Rudetsky, Disaster! currently stars Kerry Butler, Kevin Chamberlin, Adam Pascal, Faith Prince, Will Swenson, Rachel York, Max Crumm, Baylee Littrell and Lacretta Nicole.
Roger Bart will return to the production on Saturday. Swenson has been filling in for Bart, while he works on another project.
A North American licensing deal for the musical has been confirmed with Music Theatre International.
"Earthquakes, tidal waves, infernos and rampant wildlife can't stop an outrageous cast of characters from dancing, gambling and singing the night away aboard New York's first floating casino and discothèque," a synopsis said. "Disaster! features some of the most memorable pop, rock and disco hits of the 1970s, including 'Hot Stuff,' 'I Am Woman,' 'Knock On Wood,' 'Daybreak' and more."
