'Hamilton' sets new record with 16 Tony Award nominations

Among the notable 2016 Tony snubs were Jennifer Hudson for "The Color Purple," Benjamin Walker for "American Psycho," Saoirse Ronan for "The Crucible," Bruce Willis for "Misery" and Audra McDonald for "Shuffle Along."

NEW YORK, May 3 (UPI) -- The Pulitzer Prize-winning, Broadway production Hamilton was nominated for a leading 16 Tony Awards in New York on Tuesday.

The American history-themed rap musical earned one more nod than the previous record-holders The Producers and Billy Elliott.

Hamilton earned nominations for Best Musical, Best Direction in a Musical, two mentions for Best Actor in a Musical, Best Actress in a Musical, three nods for Best Featured Actor in a Musical, Best Choreography, Best Book of a Musical, Best Lighting Design, Best Orchestrations, Best Original Score, Best Featured Actress in a Musical, Best Costume Design for a Musical and Best Scenic Design.

Among the notable snubs were Jennifer Hudson for The Color Purple, Benjamin Walker for American Psycho, Saoirse Ronan for The Crucible, Bruce Willis for Misery and Audra McDonald for Shuffle Along.
