LOS ANGELES, April 21 (UPI) -- George Clooney is living the good life with wife Amal Clooney, nearly 30 years after he made his feature film debut.

The 54-year-old actor gushed about the 38-year-old human rights lawyer while discussing his greater sense of contentment and accomplishment in the May issue of Esquire magazine.

"I've never been happier in a relationship by any stretch of the imagination," the star revealed. "At 52 I found the love of my life and I'm really happy."

Clooney's bliss extends to his career and ability to be more choosy with his film roles. The actor gained widespread fame by playing Dr. Doug Ross on ER and has since starred in Ocean's Eleven, Good Night, and Good Luck and Gravity.

"I enjoy the work that I've been lucky enough to do and I wanna keep doing it," he shared. "I want to remain creative and be able to stay creative as long as they'll let me. So I wanna do that."

"The kinds of parts that I was doing I'm not going to be doing anymore," he said of leading roles. "I'm much more interested in doing films where the role makes sense for me. I'm not gonna be carrying movies the way I did before."

Clooney and Amal married in September 2014 and are often apart due to the actor's filming schedule and Amal's international clients. Clooney told Extra in February they keep their romance alive by communicating often.

"FaceTime, we'll do that. Mostly it's just try not to go very long," he said. "We spend an awful lot of time together. We don't have huge gaps ... Between my work and her work and the things we're doing, we're able to manage it pretty well."

Clooney last appeared in the Coen brothers comedy Hail, Caesar!, which opened in theaters in February. He will next star with Julia Roberts in Money Monster, which is directed by Jodie Foster and opens May 13.
