LOS ANGELES, April 1 (UPI) -- Nick Jonas is opening up about his highly-publicized purity ring commitment.
The 23-year-old actor explained the background behind the Jonas Brothers' famous show of chastity and his eventual decision to have sex before marriage in a Reddit AMA on Thursday.
"I came from an incredibly religious home," the star said. "There was a person in the church who at one point demanded that all the kids in the youth group put these purity rings on ... so without a full understanding of what we were stepping into, we all made this commitment."
Jonas and his siblings, Kevin and Joe Jonas, were at the height of their fame when they proudly told Details magazine in 2008 they wore purity rings as a symbol of their abstinence. Jonas later revealed he was no longer a virgin in 2014.
"I started making my own choices, fell in love with somebody, made the choice to have sex with them, and from that point on it was about me being a man and being okay with my choices," he said in the AMA.
"I've got a lot of perspective and real care about sex from those days," he added. "Although it was challenging to live with that, to be seen and have that attached to our name was very tough. I think it was a good thing. It gave me a really good perspective."
Jonas has dated Miley Cyrus, Samantha Barks and Olivia Culpo and was last linked to Kate Hudson. The singer-turned-actor previously told Elle magazine the purity ring "shaped [his] view on the importance of sex."
"My journey with faith evolved and became more about my personal relationship with God," he revealed. "It was about me being comfortable with my decisions. As a 22-year-old man, I'm a man in all ways, and I'm comfortable with that. It's freeing now to be transparent."
Jonas is known for playing Nate on Kingdom and Boone on Scream Queens and will release his third solo album, Last Year Was Complicated, in June. He and Demi Lovato will kick off their Future Now tour the same month.
