NEW YORK, April 1 (UPI) -- Iman is mourning the death of her mother, Maryan Baadi Abdulmajid.
The 60-year-old Somali model announced the news on her Twitter page Friday, less than three months after her husband, musician David Bowie, died at age 69.
"Saddened by the death of my mom Maryan Baadi. May Allah grant her the highest jennah #ripmaranbadi," she captioned a photo of herself with her mom on her wedding day.
Iman is the daughter of Maryan and Mohamed Abdulmajid, a diplomat and former Somalian ambassador to Saudi Arabia. The model revealed her mom gave her the confidence to pursue her dreams in a 2014 interview with the Guardian.
"She instilled ... the fact that nobody can take your self-worth unless you give your consent," she said. "She always said to me that there is nothing that the boys can do -- because I had two brothers -- that you can't do, if not better."
Iman has largely kept out of the spotlight since Bowie died of cancer Jan. 10. She and the musician were married nearly 24 years and share 15-year-old daughter Alexandria. The model is also mom to 37-year-old daughter Zulekha.
"Enjoy every single moment. The good, the bad, the beautiful, the ugly, the inspiring, the not-so-glamorous moments. And thank God through it all," Iman wrote this week.
Michael Stipe, Debbie Harry, Cyndi Lauper and the Pixies were among the stars who honored Bowie at a tribute concert Thursday evening in New York. The musicians performed such hits as "Ashes to Ashes" and "Suffragette City" at Carnegie Hall.
