A rep for the Grammy-winning R&B singer released a statement to news outlets regarding his backing out of the tour, which would have kicked off in Amsterdam over the summer.
"Due to some unforeseen changes with upcoming projects, The Weeknd will no longer be joining Rihanna on her upcoming international Anti World Tour," the rep said Wednesday morning.
A source told Billboard the singer "hit a stride on his new album," and opted not to "interrupt the process."
Rihanna's European tour kicks off in Amsterdam, Netherlands on June 11 and will still feature rapper Big Sean. The news comes shortly after Canadian artist Drake surprised his fellow "Work" collaborator on stage during a show in Miami.
Neither Rihanna's camp nor The Weeknd -- born Abel Tesfaye has commented explicitly on the latter artist's pulling out of the tour, but he did publish a cryptic tweet ahead of the announcement.
"It's my job to make music," Tesfaye wrote Tuesday, "not to convince you."
