LOS ANGELES, Feb. 19 (UPI) -- Kate Hudson opened up about her estranged dad Bill Hudson in an interview Thursday on Dirty, Sexy, Funny with Jenny McCarthy.

The 36-year-old actress discussed her complicated relationship with the 66-year-old musician, admitting she and her brother, 39-year-old actor Oliver Hudson, feel abandoned by their father.

"I think we both probably suffered differently and very similarly to anybody who feels abandoned by a parent," Kate said of herself and Oliver. "We can have a sense of humor about it together. We can laugh at the challenges we faced because of it -- together."

"To be honest, our dad, who we really don't know very well, is really funny," she shared. "So it's funny because, you know, it's a catch-22. There's a part of that, our dad, actually, from what I remember when we were younger, had a great sense of humor. When we laugh about our father, we go, 'We probably got that from him.'"

Kate and Oliver are the children of Hudson and actress Goldie Hawn, who were married from 1976 to 1982. Hudson publicly disowned his two oldest children after Oliver's 2015 Instagram post that said, "Happy abandonment day." Kate said not long after that she considers Hawn's longtime partner, Kurt Russell, her dad.

Oliver told Watch What Happens Live he and Bill were "communicating" and "might be mending something" in November, but said Kate had yet to reconnect with their dad. The actress didn't tell McCarthy if she and Bill speak, but did say she doesn't harbor ill will toward the musician.

"Life is funny. I just feel so lucky. I actually feel like it was a blessing. No matter what he goes through, I'm all forgiveness," she qualified.

Kate will next appear in Mother's Day with Jennifer Aniston and is also slated for Deepwater Horizon with Mark Wahlberg. Oliver is known for playing Adam Rhodes on Rules of Engagement, Jeff Fordham on Nashville and Wes Gardner on Scream Queens.
