LOS ANGELES, Feb. 3 (UPI) -- Caitlyn Jenner says she began her transition from male to female in the 1980s, but her then-budding romance with Kris Jenner caused the process's momentum to wane.

Speaking at the Makers Conference in California this week, Jenner revealed she was on hormones before meeting the Kardashian-Jenner matriarch, and had successfully developed size 36B breasts.

"I loved them," she said. "I thought, 'This is fabulous!' My mission at the point was to transition before I was 40. Got to 39, I just couldn't go any further." Soon after, she met Jenner, whom would be her wife of 23 years.

"We hit it off from day one," Jenner said. "I was very honest with her. I had to be, I was a 36B. Everything's really heading in the right direction, and I made this decision to move on with my life, Kris and I together with this family."

"I actually had my boobs removed," Jenner said, pausing in the clip obtained by the Today show. "I never told anyone that. The rules with Kris and I were, 'Don't dress up, certainly around the house. If you really need to do that, when you're on the road, take stuff and do that."

"So I did that for years," she added.

During the conference, Jenner experienced a serendipitous encounter with Vanity Fair photographer Annie Leibovitz, who captured the iconic magazine cover which revealed Jenner's transformation.

"I did not know that Caitlyn was going to be here tonight," Leibovitz said, according to People. "We haven't seen each other since we photographed together. That was such an amazing moment."

"We really weren't thinking that we were doing a magazine cover," she added. "It was really an emergence, it was really Caitlyn's birth."
