Iggy Pop proposed project with Josh Homme 'by text from my flip phone'

NEW YORK, Jan. 22 (UPI) -- Iggy Pop and collaborator Josh Homme appeared together for the first time on television since announcing an upcoming album.

The two appeared Thursday night wearing fashionable suits on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to discuss how the project, called Post Pop Depression, came about.

The episode also marked the debut of the album's first single, "Gardenia," which the pair played alongside some of Homme's bandmates from Queens Of The Stone Age.

"I proposed to him by text from my flip phone," Pop, who famously collaborated with the late David Bowie on "The Idiot" and "Lust For Life," told Colbert of how the project started. "I said 'I thought maybe we can write something and record it,' we didn't wanna put it in a box."

Pop and Homme's secret and independent collaboration was unveiled Wednesday in an interview published in The New York Times during which Homme said Post Pop Depression picks up where Bowie and Pop's "Lust For Life" left off.

"Where those records pointed, it stopped," he said. "But without copying it, that direction actually goes for miles. And when you keep going for miles, you can't see these two records any more."
