'American Pie' singer Don McLean arrested for assault

CAMDEN, Maine, Jan. 18 (UPI) -- Singer-songwriter Don McLean -- writer of "American Pie" -- is out on bail after being arrested early Monday morning.

The 70-year-old musician was apprehended without incident at around 3:13 a.m. early Monday morning on a domestic violence charge, local outlets WCVB and WCHS 6 report. He posted bail and was released from Knox County Jail a couple hours later.

Details about the context of McLean's arrest have yet to be reported, but local media says he is scheduled to appear in Knox County Court on Feb. 22.

McLean released the lengthy tune "American Pie" in 1971.
