David Bowie: Fans and friends react to rock icon's shocking death at 69

"Absolutely devastated by the death of Bowie. Cannot process this. At this point, the world makes no sense. RIP David. You were a genius," filmmaker Paul Feig tweeted.

LONDON, Jan. 11 (UPI) -- The world woke up Monday morning to the sad news of David Bowie's death from cancer at the age of 69.

As the word spread, artists, leaders, assorted admirers and even a cardinal from the Vatican paid tribute to the groundbreaking musician known for his otherworldly, androgynous appearance. His career spanned five decades and included acting performances in the movies The Man Who Fell to Earth, Labyrinth and Basquiat. Here is what some of the celebrities had to say about him on Twitter:

British Prime Minister David Cameron: "I grew up listening to and watching the pop genius David Bowie. He was a master of re-invention, who kept getting it right. A huge loss."

Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi, the president of the Pontifical Council for Culture: "Ground Control to Major Tom Commencing countdown, engines on Check ignition and may God's love be with you (David Bowie.)"

Madonna: "Im Devastated! This great Artist changed my life! First concert i ever saw in Detroit! R.I.P."
