Dakota Johnson weighs in on Hollywood ageism

LONDON, Jan. 6 (UPI) -- Dakota Johnson has started speaking out against Hollywood ageism and how she feels the industry treats older actresses unfairly.

In her cover interview for the February issue of British Vogue, the Fifty Shades of Grey star mentions how because of their age, her mother Melanie Griffith and grandmother Tippi Hedren are overlooked in Hollywood.

"Why isn't my mother in movies?" Johnson says. "She's an extraordinary actress! Why isn't my grandmother in movies? This industry is [expletive] brutal."

"No matter how tough you are, sometimes there's the feeling of not being wanted. It's absurd and cut-throat," she continued. "Whenever I have downtime, I'm unsure that I will ever work again. I don't know what it is, but it's a definite thing that happens to me."

When asked about her work in Fifty Shades of Grey, Johnson mentions how despite the film's taboo, erotic content, she doesn't regret taking on the starring role.

"I'm proud of Fifty Shades of Grey. I don't need to distance myself from that," the 26-year-old said. "The more work I do, the more the general public sees the different things I can do. Do I think it opened doors? Yeah. More people know my name."

Johnson will next be seen opposite Rebel Wilson in the dating comedy How to Be Single based on the Liz Tuccillo novel of the same name on Feb 12.
