Mark Hamill calls out fraudulently signed 'Star Wars' memorabilia

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 29 (UPI) -- Mark Hamill took to Twitter Monday to help fans determine which Star Wars memorabilia actually had his signature and which did not.

The actor, 64, reprises his role as Luke Skywalker in the latest film Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which called for a surge in sales of related products -- especially posters and other items said to be signed by the original Star Wars cast.

"I'm so sorry there's so many fans spending their hard-earned money for fraudulent signatures," Hamill tweeted after confirming or denying the authenticity of some items.

Many of Hamill's confirmed signatures appear alongside brief jokes he describes as "corny" written in all caps. "For dinner at dad's house," Hamill wrote on a picture of Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford and other Star Wars actors standing at the head of a dinner table tweeted by a fan.

In response to a question regarding why he's taking it upon himself to help people determine real and fake memorabilia, Hamill said, "because I owe it to all true fans to protect them from being victimized by dishonest dealers!"

Hamill retweeted real photos of authentic signed items, and urged fans to memorize his signature for the future. "Would love to save fan's hard earned $ from crooks' greed," he repeated.

Hamill will return as Luke Skywalker in the eighth installment of the Star Wars franchise. Recently, it was revealed the film's executive producer, Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams, regrets not signing on to helm the upcoming film, set for release in 2017.
