Rita Ora files lawsuit, looks to split from Jay-Z's Roc Nation label

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 18 (UPI) -- British singer Rita Ora is looking to break away from a longtime contract with Jay-Z's label Roc Nation.

Claiming the company has so diversified its interests that it has left her "orphaned" and without proper resources as an artist, Ora has filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles, Hollywood Reporter says.

The lawsuit also mentions California's "seven-year rule" regarding service contracts, which limits personal contracts such as hers to seven calendar years.

Ora signed with Roc Nation as an 18-year-old in 2008. Since then, the company made a significantly influential deal switching its distributor from Sony to Universal, which marked a turning point in her career.

"When Rita signed, Roc Nation and its senior executives were very involved with her as an artist," the filed complaint obtained by the Reporter states. "After a lot of internal shuffling," the document says, "Rita's remaining supporters at the label left or moved on to other activities, to the point where she no longer had a relationship with anyone at the company."

The company's other interests referenced in the complaint include the Roc Nation sports agency and Jay-Z's young streaming service Tidal. The document ultimately refers to the label as "diminished" with only a small group of "admittedly worthy heritage superstar artists."

Since being "orphaned" by her label, Ora has reportedly been funding her own work including TV appearances, recording studio costs and other media projects.
