LOS ANGELES, Dec. 18 (UPI) -- Martin Sheen is doing well after undergoing elective heart surgery this week.

The 75-year-old actor's eldest son, Emilio Estevez, revealed as much Wednesday on Facebook, telling fans Sheen had a "very successful quadruple bypass surgery" as a "proactive" measure, not an emergency situation.

"With my mother Janet and our family by his side and under the coordination of his extraordinary team of cardiologists, doctors and nurses, my father displayed great courage, strength and humility as he took on this challenge," the 53-year-old actor wrote.

"Not surprisingly, he is recovering beautifully, out of the ICU and is expected to not only be home for Christmas, but be 100% by the time he returns to work on season three of the Netflix series Grace and Frankie early next year," he added.

Estevez shared a photo of Sheen giving a thumbs up and holding a heart pillow from the hospital the next day, writing, "My Pop! Successful proactive quadruple bypass surgery this week! A great blessing indeed!"

Sheen is also father to 52-year-old Ramon Estevez, 50-year-old Charlie Sheen and 48-year-old Renee Estevez. The actor showed his support for Charlie Sheen in November, praising his son's "courage" following the Two and a Half Men star's HIV reveal.
