LOS ANGELES, Dec. 8 (UPI) -- A limited-edition Barbie modeled on Selma director Ava DuVernay sold out within hours of being available.

The doll, a part of maker Mattel's "Sheroes" line of Barbies went on sale Monday after fans campaigned in April to have the originally one-of-a-kind line released to the public.

"Embodying the empowerment message the brand stands behind, Barbie is honoring these Sheroes who, like Barbie, have broken boundaries, challenged gender norms and proven girls can be anything they want to be," the company said in a statement in April. Other inspirational women represented by the line include actresses Emmy Rossum, Kristin Chenoweth, singer Trisha Yearwood, 5-year-old designer Sydney "Mayhem" Keiser and fashion editor Eva Chen.

"Our @AVAETC #Barbie doll is here! Get yours on http://TheBarbieCollection.com at 10am PST! #Shero #YouCanBeAnything," Mattel tweeted Monday next to a photo of the doll.

Fans rushed the Barbie collection website to purchase DeVernay's doll before the company directed buyers over to Amazon where it also quickly sold out. By Tuesday, the collector's item originally priced at $65 was already being offered for $350 on eBay.

"Sold out on Barbie collection, I'm told. More available at Amazon. What the hell is going on? #bananas #nuts #whoa," the Golden Globe nominated director tweeted about the fast-selling item.

DuVernay has stated that all proceeds from her Barbie will help benefit charities such as The Color of Change, a civil rights advocacy group, and Witness, a human rights organization founded by musician Peter Gabriel.
