NEW YORK, Nov. 25 (UPI) -- Charlie Puth says making out with Meghan Trainor was a little weird.

The 23-year-old singer admitted as much in an interview with USA Today published Tuesday. Puth and the 21-year-old recording artist sent fans into a frenzy by sharing a passionate kiss at the end of their American Music Awards performance Sunday.

"Meghan and I are good enough friends that we can laugh about it now," the star said. "At first, we were like, 'Holy [expletive], what did we do?' I have a girl kind of in my life right now that I'm not making too public and I don't want people to get the wrong idea."

"I didn't know people would care about my lips on my friend's lips so much," he marveled. "Meghan is literally like my best friend, so it was a little weird at first, but it added something to the visual element of the performance, for sure."

Puth previously clarified the kiss was platonic, tweeting, "Before it begins... we are just friends. So happy to perform with Meghan tonight!" Trainor also downplayed the steamy lip-lock, telling fans she's "single" on Instagram.
