The superhero action film, will star Channing Tatum as the Marvel character, who adapts energy to cause explosions.
Entertainment Weekly says that Gambit will wield a deck of cards and "plenty of charm."
The site also reported that the film's female lead role as assassin organization leader Bella Donna Boudreaux has been offered to Spectre actress Lea Seydoux.
Tatum will produce the film along with Simon Kinberg, Lauren Shuler Donner, and Reid Carolin.
