Rollins was set to meet Roman Reigns at the company's annual November event Survivor Series with the championship on the line. WWE announced Thursday that the title would be vacated and that a tournament would be held at the pay-per-view to crown a new champion.

Rollins won the title in shocking fashion when he defeated both Brock Lesnar and Roman Reigns in a triple-threat match at WrestleMania 31 in March.

Back in September, wrestling icon Sting suffered a serious neck injury during a match with Rollins that could shorten his career.

Rollins last made headlines in August when he defeated John Cena at SummerSlam with help from former Daily Show host Jon Stewart.
