LOS ANGELES, Oct. 18 (UPI) -- Professional basketball player Lamar Odom's condition is improving since he awoke from his four-day coma Friday, but he remains hospitalized in an intensive-care unit.

Odom, 35, was discovered unconscious at a Nevada brothel last Tuesday. Both cocaine and opiates reportedly were found in his system. He was initially on life support, but is now said to be conscious and breathing on his own.

"Lamar today again has had moments when he is awake and more responsive," a source told People magazine Sunday.

"He is still in the ICU, is receiving oxygen and sleeps a lot. He is not talking, but seems to understand when [his estranged wife] Khloé [Kardashian] and the medical staff speak to him. He will have another head MRI in the next few days to check for any damage that could have been caused by the strokes," the insider said. "Khloé still hasn't left his side and looks very tired. As soon as Lamar wakes up, she rushes over to hold his hand. She sleeps on a pullout bed next to Lamar."

Odom married Kardashian in 2009 after a monthlong courtship. They split up in 2013, however their divorce has not been finalized.
