WASHINGTON, Oct. 16 (UPI) -- Actress Rachel Bilson said although she is new to motherhood, she already feels as if she can lend her maternal love to all children.

Honored at the most recent No Kid Hungry benefit dinner, the mother-of-one took to the stage to share the impact becoming a parent has made on her outlook concerning child hunger. "I'm a new mom...ish," Bilson said. "She's almost one, which is crazy. But you kind of feel like a mom to all kids at this point. Finding out that so many kids in our country are hungry is just not OK. So, getting involved was very important to us."

Bilson and her fiancee Hayden Christensen's little girl, Briar Rose, was born almost a year ago, but the actress hadn't revealed much about her life as a mom until the Wednesday night event. Regarding her baby, Bilson told reporters ahead of the dinner, "she's doing good. She's a smart little girl -- very active."

"I am a mother in real life," she continued, "You kind of feel like you take on mothering all children, so it's so important to know that your children are fed. It's a little thing that can go over your head, but it's so important. Kids are going to school hungry, they're not absorbing information as well, and their education isn't benefiting as much as it could."

No Kid Hungry is a campaign run by Share Our Strength that focuses on ending childhood hunger in the United States. According to its website, it works to connect children with nutrition programs both in schools and outside of schools. The organization honored both Bilson and fellow actress Kristen Bell, its new champion members.
