SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 30 (UPI) -- Lena Dunham no longer runs her own Twitter account. The 29-year-old actress revealed as much in an interview with Re/code Decode on Monday. Dunham told host Kara Swisher she quit the social media site after she was body shamed over a recent Instagram photo of herself in her boyfriend's underwear.

"It wasn't a graphic picture," she said of the snapshot. "I was wearing men's boxers and it turned into the most rabid, disgusting debate about women's bodies, and my Instagram page was somehow the hub for misogynists for the afternoon."
"Even if you think, like, 'Oh I can read, like, 10 mentions that say I should be stoned to death' and kind of, like, laugh and move on, that's verbal abuse," she asserted. "Those aren't words that should be directed at you ever. And so, for me personally, it was safer to stop [using Twitter]."
Dunham and Girls producer Jenni Konner appeared on podcast to promote their latest project, Lenny. The pair created the online newsletter as an alternative to websites such as BuzzFeed and Gawker to discuss "feminism, style, health, politics, friendship and everything else."
Dunham is best known as the creator and star of HBO series Girls, which will return for a fifth season in 2016. The actress intends to end the show after season 6, telling Elvis Duran and the Morning Show on Tuesday, "Never say never, but that is the way that we're thinking about it right now."
