LOS ANGELES, Sept. 30 (UPI) -- Singer and actress Demi Lovato recently went topless for Complex magazine.

The 23-year-old former Disney star stripped down for the publication's October/November issue. Lovato, who struggled with bulimia for years, discussed self image in the interview, and addressed her rumored relationship with Orange is the New Black actress Ruby Rose.

"[The Kardashians] kind of revolutionized what beauty was when it came to body shapes," she said. "From then, I noticed that Beyoncé was thicker, and Nicki Minaj is thicker ... Watching them really helped me to learn to accept my body image, too. I'm not naturally super thin. I have an athletic body. I just have to embrace that."

Lovato previously credited her boyfriend of five years, actor Wilmer Valderrama, with helping her maintain healthy eating habits. The singer told the magazine she's "the happiest that [she's] ever been" with Valderrama, and denied reports she wrote "Cool for the Summer" after dating Ruby Rose.

"I did not have a relationship with Ruby Rose," she asserted. "What matters to me is my relationship with Wilmer. We are in an amazing place. Rumors are rumors, and people are going to spread them. You can believe what you want, but no, I was not in a relationship with her."

Lovato sparked speculation over her sexual orientation with the song, which includes the lyrics, "I'm a little curious, too" and "Got a taste for the cherry, I just need to take a bite." She recently hinted at her possible bisexuality, and declared "love is fluid" in the interview.

"Humans are humans, and when you connect with somebody on a spiritual level it doesn't matter," she said. "I don't want people to ever look at the past or rumors or anything and try to figure me out. There's a lot of relationships that I've had where nobody has even guessed it. Not everybody knows everything about me."

Lovato also discussed her friendship with rapper Iggy Azalea and her dreams for her future wedding with the magazine. The singer will release her fifth studio album, Confident, on Oct. 16, and paired with director Robert Rodriguez on the title track's music video last week.
