WASHINGTON, Sept. 18 (UPI) -- Twitter says fall TV is abuzz on the popular social media site, so it effectively quantified just how much netizens are chatting about new and returning shows.

According to a report, over 21 million tweets have been written about upcoming premieres for various water-cooler shows, such as American Horror Story: Hotel and The Walking Dead. However, ABC's Grey's Anatomy takes the top spot as the most popular show on Twitter with about 2.2 million tweets. Last year, the Shondaland show was ranked as number six on the list.

The second and third hottest shows on social media ahead of the fall premiere season are Supernatural and The Walking Dead. earning 2 million and 1.9 million tweets respectively. Last year, Walking Dead was the number one most tweeted-about series.

The "new" show raking in the highest amount of buzz on the microblogging platform is FX's AHS: Hotel. With about 1.1 million tweets mentioning it, the series' fifth season comes just before Stephen Colbert's The Late Show and FOX's Scream Queens.

Twitter reports about 90 percent of the fall TV conversation was dedicated to returning shows while the rest mainly stuck to new ones. This is most likely due to the established communities of fans surrounding each show using Twitter to express their excitement over the new seasons.
