HOLLYWOOD, Sept. 16 (UPI) -- Actress, director and producer Elizabeth Banks is reportedly in talks to take over the latest Charlie's Angels reboot alongside her husband, producer Max Handelman.

According to Hollywood Reporter, Sony has entered talks with the Pitch Perfect 2 helmer to restart the franchise, which follows three female private detectives. A search for a writer is underway, the outlet reports.

The reboot is based on the 1970s television series featuring Farrah Fawcett, Kate Jackson and Jaclyn Smith. In 2000, director McG tackled a reboot featuring Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz and Lucy Liu, but what was left of the franchise effectively died with 2003's Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle.

Charlie's Angels returned to television briefly for four episodes in 2011 and hasn't been heard from since.

Banks, known for her role as Effie in The Hunger Games and Gail in Pitch Perfect 2, made her directorial debut with the latter film in early 2015. The actress is reportedly drawn to female empowerment projects like Pitch, which follows the story of a female a cappella group which beats the odds in an international competition. The musical received warm reviews and over $150 million in profit domestically.

Banks has also appeared in cinema and TV projects like Magic Mike XXL, Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp, and 30 Rock. There is no word on whether she will be directing the third Pitch Perfect installment, but Banks has been picked to lead the TV movie The Greater Good.
