LOS ANGELES, Sept. 3 (UPI) -- Rockstars Avril Lavigne and Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger are separating after two years of marriage.

Lavigne announced the split on Instagram Wednesday with a photo of the pair accompanied by a long caption that mentioned how the Canadian rockers would still remain friends.

"It is with [a] heavy heart that Chad and I announce our separation today. Through not only the marriage, but the music as well, we've created many unforgettable moments. We are still, and forever will be, the best of friends, and will always care deeply for each other. To all our family, friends and fans, thank you sincerely for the support."

Lavigne, 30, and Kroeger, 40, tied the knot in Canada back in July 2013.

A year into the marriage the couple continuously denied divorce rumors. In 2013, Lavigne outlined for People magazine a set of rules the pair used in order to have a successful marriage.

"When you have something special, you can't take it for granted and be careless with it," the Sk8er Boi singer told People.

The rules included creating a set schedule of when they saw each other, not drinking when apart and no visiting nightclubs.

The separation comes months after Avril Lavigne revealed in April her struggle with Lyme disease. This is Lavigne's second marriage after divorcing from Sum 41 frontman Deryck Whibley in 2009.
