Upcoming 'Zorro' flick to be set in post-apocalyptic future

HOLLYWOOD, Aug. 22 (UPI) -- Zorro is returning, and with a futuristic vengeance.

The Hollywood Reporter reveals Lantica Media and Sobini Films have successfully agreed to a partnership to launch Zorro Reborn -- a post-apocalyptic Zorro movie for today's generation.

Zorro's mysterious Robin Hood-like character was created in 1919 by New York pulp writer Johnston McCulley. The first film depicting the Spanish vigilante, The Mark of Zorro debuted in 1920. The most recent Zorro film was Martin Campbell's The Legend of Zorro starring Antonia Banderas and Catherine Zeta-Jones released in 2005.

Lantica, a Dominican Republic-based media investing company, will finance the latest production, which is expected to begin shooting next spring. Sobini CEO Mark Amin (Good Kill, Frida) will produce the film. A director is still being sought and no actors have been confirmed.

"This has been a 15-year journey filled with ups and downs," Amin said, according to the Reporter. "But it has remained my passion project over the years."

Lantica's CEO Antonio Gennari second's Amin's excitement saying, "Every generation has its own Zorro hero and we're proud to be able to introduce a new Zorro to this generation."
